The Graduated Driver License (GDL) allows beginning drivers (ages 15 ½ to 18) to gain knowledge and driving experience while under the supervision of an experienced mentor as they progress through the learning stages.
Graduated licensing gives new drivers the opportunity to practice driving with certain restrictions in place. These restrictions help to limit high-risk driving situations and increase supervision and parental involvement.
As the teen driver matures and reaches various milestones, they are allowed to graduate to a less restrictive license and eventually receive a full unrestricted license.
