    Background Record Checks

There is a lot of information that is provided to citizens as part of the larger public record.

    Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT)

    Drivers License Status Check
Find out if your driver license is valid, suspended, revoked or disqualified.

    License Plate Look Up
Find out when your plate expires; find out if your plate is suspended or valid; and more. www.dot.wisconsin.gov/drivers/online.htm

    Driver Record Abstracts
Look up your own driver record or someone else’s record. Driver record abstracts are computer-generated copies of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV’s) driver records. Most driver record entries are retained for five years; however, certain convictions can result in a driver record being retained indefinitely.

Department of Justice Crime Information Bureau (CIB)

The Crime Information Bureau is part of the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Law Enforcement Services. CIB operates, manages and disseminates information to respond to public requests for background criminal record checks.

    Wisconsin’s Criminal History Repository
The repository contains arrest and conviction information on over 1,000,000 individuals dating back to 1971. There are 3 ways to pay for requests: an established account; a credit card; or a check via US Mail.

    Sex Offender Registry

Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry | offender.doc.state.wi.us/public
In 1997, the State of Wisconsin enacted the Sex Offender Registration and Community Notification Law. This law was created to monitor and track people convicted of sex crimes and to provide access to this information for police, victims and the general public.

    Family Watchdog | www.familywatchdog.us
Free national US search for registered sex offenders. Map registered sex offenders to see who lives in your area.

Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website | www.nsopr.gov
The Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW), coordinated by the U.S. Department of Justice, is a cooperative effort between Jurisdictions hosting public sex offender registries (“Jurisdictions”) and the federal government. These Jurisdictions include the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, the District of Columbia, and participating tribes.

The criteria for searching are limited to what each individual Jurisdiction may provide. Also, because information is hosted by each Jurisdiction and not by the federal government, search results should be verified by the user in the Jurisdiction where the information is posted. Users are advised to visit the corresponding Jurisdiction Websites for further information and/or guidance, as appropriate.

The court record summaries viewed here are all public records under Wisconsin open records law.
